What is a Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8)

The Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) assists very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Program participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments. Our agency receives federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer this program. To complete the online application click here.

Under the Housing Choice Voucher Program, families are issued a voucher to look for housing in the private market. Participants are able to rent a housing unit from any landlord who agrees to participate in the program. A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the housing authority and the family pays the difference, if any, between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.
